Found on Le Spectacle de la nature of l'abbé Pluche... by the Rev. W. Bingley, A.M., Fellow of the Linnean Society... in Three Volumes' [titled in another volume 'Spectacle de la nature or Conversations on the Works and Wonders of Created Nature. Founded on ['modernized from' struck through] the work of the abbé la Pluche... by the Rev. W. Bingley..., Late of Peterhouse Cambridge, and author of Animal Biography', 3 vol., approximately 265 leaves (mostly verso only), with corrections and deletions, one full-page ground plan of a cow/straw shed, 7 engraved natural history plates, a 'Tide Table for Ramsgate Harbour for the Year 1821' (with several manuscript amendments) printed by Burgess, Hunt & Carter, and William Curtis's 'A Short History of the Brown-Tail Moth' (1783, lacking plate) bound in, original pink boards (worn, one spine detached but mostly retained) [Phillipps MS 16108 & 16873 'Bingley's Spectacle de la Nature. MS Autograph. 3 Vols....'], 4to, [watermarked 1814-1821] (5) Footnotes: Yorkshire-born William Bingley (1774-1823) was a clergyman and naturalist, in whose popularising zoological works he 'gave an entertaining and palatable introduction to the basic zoological facts' (ODNB). These included Animal Biography (1802), Memoirs of British Quadrupeds (1809), and Animated Nature (1814), for which the 'British Fishes' was written. The 3 volume manuscript for 'The Works of God Displayed', inspired by Frenchman L'abbe Pluché's Le Spectacle de la nature (first translated into English in 1733), appears not have been published. It is similar in format to Bingley's Biographical Conversations on the Most Eminent and Instructive British Characters (1818). In both, conversations between the characters of Sir Charles Irwin, his family and son's tutor Mr. Allen are used to explain their subjects.
