DARWIN (CHARLES) The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection... Fifth Thousand, [second edition, second issue], half-title with 3 quotations on verso, folding lithograph diagram by William West after Darwin facing p.117, 32-page publisher's catalogue dated January 1860 at end, p.ix re-inserted upside down, some foxing and light toning, publisher's green blind-stamped cloth (Freeman's variant a), gilt stamped spine, corners bumped, spine with loss at head (touching letter 'O' of 'Origin') and frayed at foot [Freeman 376; Norman 594], 8vo, John Murray, 1860 Footnotes: The second edition of 'one of the most important books ever published' (Garrison-Morton), in original cloth binding. The first edition print run consisted of only 1250 copies, which were sold out in a day with 250 more already on order. In response John Murray chose not to reprint it, but wrote to Darwin asking him to start revising it, although the author considered the resulting 3,000 copies to have been merely 'corrected'.
