EINSTEIN (ALBERT) Autograph letter signed ('A. Einstein') to Professor Michael Sadler ('Sehr geehrter Herr Kollege'), in German, regretting he can not honour his commitment for the evening of May 28th as he is leaving earlier than expected, only just having received news from Berlin, one page, light dust-staining, creased at folds, 4to (227 x 176mm.), [n.p. but Oxford], 23 May [19]31 Footnotes: In May 1931, Einstein stayed at Christ Church, Oxford at the invitation of the German-born experimental physicist Frederick Lindemann (later Lord Cherwell, science advisor to Winston Churchill during the Second World War). Whilst there he gave three lectures at Rhodes House on relativity, cosmology and unified field theory, and received, on the day of our letter, an honorary doctorate. The blackboards used for these lectures are preserved at the Museum of the History of Science. He stayed in Oxford until 27 May and here sends his apologies to Sir Michael Sadler (1861-1943), then master of University College, Oxford, for an appointment the following day. Known as a champion of modernist art, Sadler built up a significant personal collection including works by Kandinsky and Gauguin, and had headed the 'Sadler Commission' from 1917-19 which looked into the state of Indian Education. Our letter is not yet included in The Collected Papers, the latest published volume ending in November 1930.
