This letter to his brother, and the personal inscriptions in copies of his own works (and a set of Shakespeare) to his mother, brothers James and John, and his nephew convey the warmth he had for his family. He shows another side of his personality in the candid opinion he records in one of the books gifted to him by admirers, noting that the author 'Wants to know if it should be published. Answer NO: it is, in fact, worth nothing, either in public or in private!'. Provenance: Thomas Carlyle, and by family descent to the vendor.
