RESTORATION BINDING ALLESTREE (RICHARD) The Government of the Tongue... the Fifth Impression, some soiling, light damp-staining and pencilling in margins, contemporary dark red goatskin, heavily decorated in gilt all over, the sides with drawer handles in black, water lilies, rosettes, tulips and other floral tools, leafy branches, and an uncommon tool of a cherub holding a banner, some flowers, handles and angels heightened with paint (now faded), spine in 6 compartments with flower tools and raised bands, g.e., housed in cloth chemise and case (end joints split) [ESTC R4579], 8vo, Oxford, at the Theater, 1667 [but 1677] Footnotes: A REDISCOVERED COMPANION TO A KNOWN BINDING - WITH A VERY UNUSUAL CHERUB TOOL. An identical binding on a 1679 edition of Allestree's The Gentleman's Calling was described and illustrated in Maggs Bros. Catalogue 1212, Bookbinding in the British Isles, Part I, no.61: 'We have not found the tool of a cherub standing holding a banner on any other binding of the period, however an elongated tulip and the air of leafy branches seem to be the same tools as occur on no.50 in Hobson English Bindings... of J.R. Abbey. This Abbey binding also has a cherub tool which Abbey describes as 'hovering'..' The entry goes on to refer to our volume, describing it as 'almost certainly from the same set', and supplies the Phoebe A. Doyle provenance details given below. Provenance: Elizabeth Meares, early inscription on A2; Phoebe A. Doyle, her sale, Anderson Galleries, 19 November 1923, lot 205; Julia Parker Wightman (1909-1994), gilt bookplate.
