For a similar use of interlacing ribbons in the overall design and the same small sun tool, see Howard M. Nixon, English Restoration Bindings, no. 63, and Mirjam M. Foot, The Henry Davis Gift. A Collection of Bookbindings, volume II, no. 120. For the same roll-tool border, curls and flower tools see Nixon, op cit., no. 61 and Foot, op cit., no. 118. Nixon's research led him to suggest that Queen's Binder A is William Nott, one of the leading craftsmen of the second half of the seventeenth century, described by Samuel Pepys as 'the famous bookbinder'. Provenance: Courtland F. Bishop, gilt bookplate; sale by order of his executors at Anderson Galleries, 1938-1939, Part III, lot 2357; Julia Parker Wightman (1909-1994), gilt bookplate. Wightman (1909-1994) was an American bibliophile and book collector, noted for her impressive collection of miniature books, children's books, herbals, incunabula, illuminated manuscripts and fine bindings. In 1965, following her father's death, she converted his offices at the family home into a bindery, where she created bindings and cases for some of the volumes in her library.
