BOTANICAL WATERCOLOURS An album of 92 botanical watercolours, after illustrations from William Curtis's 'Botanical Magazine', the watercolours on wove or laid paper (4 with watermark '1808' some with 'J. Whatman' watermark), most on single sheets, some 2 images to on bi-folium leaf, most accompanied with a leaf of descriptive text in manuscript, shaken (some loose) in contemporary morocco-backed boards, very worn with losses, 8vo (245 x 150mm.), [early nineteenth century, text paper watermarked 1810-1814] Footnotes: An early nineteenth century album of well-executed botanical watercolours, meticulously copied from prints (by Sydenham Teast Edwards, and others) in the early volumes of Curtis' Botanical Magazine (c.1787-1793). Provenance: 'Thomas Duncanson/His Book', early ink inscription inside upper cover. This is presumably the Thomas Duncanson who, having been a gardener at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, moved to Kew Gardens in 1822 where, until he suffered a mental illness in 1826, he was employed by W.T. Aiton to draw botanical specimens for a proposed second edition of his Epitome of Hortus Kewensis. It seems probably that the watercolours are by Duncanson himself, perhaps as an exercise in botanical draughtsmanship some six or seven years before he started work at Kew.
