BINDING - WILLIAMSON OF ETON VALERIUS MAXIMUS. Dictorum factorumque memorabilium exempla, woodcut printer's device on title, damp-staining mainly to first half of volume, pencil markings in margins, a few old stains, early seventeenth century calf by Williamson of Eton, sides with gilt and blind rule border with acorn and oak-leaf tool in corners and crowned falcon crest of Anne Boleyn in centre, spine with later red morocco label and repeated quatrefoil tool in each of the 7 other compartments, some wear to surface leather on upper cover, small holes for original ties, spine ends restored, housed in roan-backed solander box [Adams V108; Renouard, Estienne I:65], 8vo, Paris, Robert Estienne, 1544 Footnotes: EARLY SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ENGLISH BINDING BY WILLIAMSON OF ETON. Vincent Williamson (fl. 1602-1621) was a bookbinder at Eton whose crowned falcon tool, as seen here, was for a long time believed to indicate the book had belonged to Anne Boleyn, whose family crest it was. But the tool was extensively used, as was the quatrefoil tool on the spine and the triple rule border (one gilt), and most of the bindings are now accepted as being trade rather than royal ones. Provenance: Julia Parker Wightman (1909-1994), gilt bookplate.
