Only two copies traced in institutions, BL and Cambridge, of this first-hand account of the British assault on Montevideo of 1807. Sir Samuel Auchinleck (1758-1822), who joined the army at 15, had a distinguished military career spanning India, Egypt (where he served under Sir David Baird and took part in the desert march), and the Rohilla War. He rose to lieutenant-colonel, served as military secretary to Sir Robert Brownrigg, and was adjutant-general for the whole British force during the ill-fated Río de la Plata campaign. Despite the broader British failure, Auchinleck distinguished himself at the siege of Montevideo and in the subsequent operations. The account is generally attributed to Major Tucker, Auchinleck's brigade major, who served with the 72nd Foot. Auchinleck later faced a court martial over conduct during the Buenos Aires phase of the campaign but was acquitted. He was subsequently promoted major-general.
