Pocock, a few light splash marks in margin of one plate, contents loose in the publisher's original printed wrappers (titled 'Illustration of the Battle of Algier, August 27, 1816' on the upper cover, lower cover advertising other titles, scuffed with loss to a few words), no spine [not in Abbey], oblong folio (350 x 500mm.), Published for the Proprietor, by T. Cadell and W. Davies, 15 May 1817 Footnotes: VERY RARE, with no copies listed at auction by Rare Book Hub since 1918, and retaining the original printed wrappers. The views, by marine artist Lieutenant William Innes Pocock (1783-1836), illustrate the naval bombardment of the the City of Algiers, with the intention 'to suppress piracy against Europeans by the North African Barbary states. The specific aim of this expedition, in which an Anglo-Dutch fleet under the command of Admiral Lord Exmouth bombarded ships and the harbour defences of Algiers, was to free Christian slaves and to stop the practice of enslaving Europeans' (Royal Museums Greenwich, website).
