Martel ('Monsieur'), in French, with regards to publishing his meteorological research in La Nature, drawing his attention to an article by M. Durand-Gréville published in the Revue générale des Sciences ('...c'est une analyse très complète et qui m'a semblé parfaite. Je viens d'écrire à l'auteur pour l'en féliciter...'), and commenting that he is an admirer of Martel's bold cave explorations, one page, dust-staining, slight discolouration, right edge torn from larger sheet, 8vo (207 x 132mm.), Villa Salles, Beaulieu, 6 March [19]06 Footnotes: Eiffel here writes to Edouard-Alfred Martel (1859-1938), the editor of La Nature, and who became known as 'the father of modern speleology' for popularising the pursuit of cave exploration and for founding the Société de Spéléologie. After his retirement from engineering, Eiffel focused on research into meteorology and aerodynamics, partly in consequence of problems he had encountered with the effects of wind forces on his structures, particularly the Eiffel Tower. Indeed, Eiffel had meteorological measuring equipment placed on the tower in 1889, and also built a weather station at his house in Sèvres.
