GANDHI (MAHATMA) Autograph letter signed ('Blessings from Bapu') to Jal Khambhatta, in Gujarati, sorry to hear he has not been well, reassuring him '...Have faith that not a leaf falls without God's will, and so, trusting to Him, meditate on Him and have patience. If it is His will, you will be all right...', bearing stencilled number '7537' in centre and pencilled reference number 'CW 5013', one page on handmade paper, discoloured and marked, creased at fold, 8vo (182 x 144mm.), Satyagraha Ashram, Sabarmati, 19 March 1928 Footnotes: 'HAVE FAITH THAT NOT A LEAF FALLS WITHOUT GOD'S WILL': GANDHI REASSURES THE SON OF HIS FRIEND BEHRAM KHAMBHATTA. Gandhi's belief in 'God's will' was the cornerstone of his spiritual and political philosophy and his words of faith in our letter were reiterated in an article for the Harijan magazine: 'We do not know all the laws of God nor their working... God is not a personal being for me like my earthly father, He is infinitely more. He rules me in the tiniest detail of my life. I believe literally that not a leaf moves but by His will. Every breath I take depends upon His sufferance' (16 February 1934, p.4). Jal Khambhatta was the son of Behram and Tehmina Khambhatta, friends and supporters of Gandhi (see adjacent lot). A large correspondence between Gandhi and the Khambhatta family survives, many of the letters from Gandhi offering spiritual support and advice such as here, with Dr Khambhatta in turn offering advice on Gandhi's physical health. Our letter is published in The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, Vol.36, no.135.
