CASSATT (MARY) Autograph letter signed ('M. Cassatt') to an unknown recipient ('Chère Madame'), in French, having had her letter informing her she is no longer in Paris and that she can no longer look after Mme Lepine's affairs, that she will give Mme Lepine some money to pay her debts before the sale, on her wish to help the poor families of workers (''...It would save the children from death...') and shows no sympathy for those who are able to work but do not, on mourning paper, 3 pages on a bifolium, light dust-staining, creased at folds, short tears along folds, 8vo (170 x 127mm.), rue de Marignan, Paris, 'Mercredi' Footnotes: Our letter would appear to refer to Mme Lépine, the wife of Stanislas Lépine (1835-1892) a student of Corot and painter of landscapes who exhibited in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. Mme Lépine was herself painted by Manet in 1878. Cassatt regularly used her wealth to support struggling artists, although she demonstrates here that she gave short shrift to those she thought would not help themselves, particularly where it might cause suffering to the children.
