CHURCHILL (WINSTON) Autograph letter signed ('Winston S Churchill') to Ivor Guest ('My dear Ivor'), advising him not to take employment in Australia or New Zealand ('...you are not suited for it & wd not enjoy it... Bombay wd be a different matter...'), that he should accept '...with alacrity the Nationalist invitation to go to Dublin... a most useful & valuable idea... make the best speech you can there and make them feel you are their friend... am most anxious you shd make no mistakes...', marked 'Confidential', docketed '15' top left corner in another hand, 2 pages on a bifolium, dust-staining and discolouration around edges, 8vo (202 x 128mm.), Admiralty, 26 June 1912 Footnotes: 'MAKE THE BEST SPEECH YOU CAN THERE AND MAKE THEM FEEL YOU ARE THEIR FRIEND': CHURCHILL OFFERS ADVICE TO HIS COUSIN DURING THE HOME RULE CRISIS. The recipient of our letter, Ivor Churchill Guest, 1st Viscount Wimborne (1873-1939), was Winston Churchill's cousin, his mother being Lady Cornelia Spencer-Churchill, Churchill's aunt. Here, Churchill reveals his role as friend and mentor to his cousin on matters both political and personal, although it has to be said that Guest often did not take his advice. Guest crossed the floor with Churchill to the Liberal party in support of free trade in February 1904 and was returned for Cardiff in the General Election of 1906. He served as Paymaster General in the Asquith government until 1912. Here Churchill urges Guest to travel to Dublin to make a speech on Irish nationalism. At this time Churchill was a firm supporter of Home Rule and had visited Belfast in February 1912 to speak in favour of the third Home Rule Bill, a meeting which had to be moved to another venue due to violent protests.
