JOYCE (JAMES) Autograph manuscript of English to Italian vocabulary on pages from a student's exercise book, c.16 pages with entries by Joyce, the rest in the hand of the student, in ink and pencil, comprising English grammar, vocabulary (numbers, parts of the body, food, clothes), and a few phrases ('...The box of matches is lyeing [sic] on the desk... We have a box in the theatre... I give you a box on the nose... The plant of box in my garden is green...'), 26 pages on lined paper removed from a notebook, dust-staining and marks, 8vo (202 x 130mm.), [n.p. but Trieste, n.d. but c.1905] Footnotes: 'I GIVE YOU A BOX ON THE NOSE': JAMES JOYCE TEACHES ENGLISH TO AN ITALIAN IN TRIESTE. Joyce excelled in languages at the Jesuit-run Belvedere College, where he studied Latin, French and Italian and continued his studies at University College, Dublin, from whence he graduated in 1902. In October 1904, Joyce and Nora Barnacle eloped to Paris where he heard of a job going at the Berlitz School teaching English but, finding there was nothing available there, the couple were sent to Trieste, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and then on to Pola, where Joyce taught English to naval officers. By March 1905 he was back at the Berlitz School in Trieste (the name of the director, Artifoni, was woven into Ulysses), where Joyce combined part-time hours at the school with private tuition, numbering some of Trieste's leading personalities amongst his pupils, but was soon able to resign from the school to concentrate on his private students. Trieste was to be their home during most of the following ten years (both his children were born there and given Italian names) and it proved to be a formative period of Joyce's career: '...the bustling, almost oriental, cosmopolitanism of Trieste and its busy commercial port would leave its mark on his imagination, in Ulysses above all, the great novel of his maturity begun there...' From there he published his book of poems, Chamber Music, his short-story collection Dubliners, and in 1914 began serially publishing A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in the English magazine, The Egoist. The outbreak of war forced them to leave what Joyce called la nostra bella Trieste for Switzerland in 1915, where the family resided for the rest of the war. The present manuscript originally came from the grandson of the student to whom Joyce is teaching English. The student had been given the graduation gift of a trip to England, and therefore needed to learn some basic English prior to the trip. According to his grandson some pages were ripped out of the original notebook as Joyce helpfully taught him some words to use when going to a brothel, something which the student thought prudent to remove.
