SUFFRAGE - COOKERY DOWSON (AUBREY, compiler) The Women's Suffrage Cookery Book, FIRST EDITION, light toning and spotting (mostly to opening and final few leaves), publisher's green cloth-backed red and white pictorial boards depicting three women and a child, light soiling, rubbed at corners, square 8vo, Women's Printing Society, [1909] Footnotes: This cookbook had two main objectives, firstly to raise funds for the suffragette movement, and secondly to provide quick and simple dishes for women to prepare for their family so that they would have more time to be active in campaigning for the cause. It includes 'Menus for Meals for Suffrage Workers' with a selection of dishes that 'must be simple and such as can be eaten quickly, and also which will keep hot without spoiling and can be eaten with impunity at any hour'. There is also a 'recipe for cooking and preserving a good suffrage speaker' contributed by Mrs. Bertrand Russell: 'If this recipe is carefully followed, the speaker will be found to preserve her flavour to the last moment, and will do her utmost to make the meeting a success'. The compiler, Aubrey Dowson, was secretary of the Midland Federation of Suffragists. The book was announced in the 18 November 1909 issue of the periodical The Common Cause, where it is stated that 'The proceeds of the sale are to go to the National Union' (p.422). This is the scarcer of two variant covers (no priority given), the other depicting two children under an apple tree.
