TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (HENRI DE) Two autograph letters signed ('Henri' and 'H') to his mother ('Ma chère Maman'), in French, the first confirming he has received her far from reassuring letter, that he has seen his father, with good news about Ricardelle, and Louis with bad news about Respide [their respective estates], announcing there has been a revolution at the studio as Cormon has fired the student in charge, that he is painting a woman with golden hair, and ending by admitting that his drawing for Le Figaro is not yet finished; the second hoping that '...Vous devez avoir reçu votre fille aux longues oreilles... Elle a l'air très esperpil et vivace...' [a puppy from Madame Bonnefoy] and that she owes him 34.50 francs, hoping the puppy will get along with the other little dogs but that she is a breed that takes care of themselves, mentioning a trip to Nîmes with Guibert and going to Marseilles via Ricardelle (he is thirsting for the salt water), adding a postscript saying he will need to dip into the big sum of money to pay some bills, 6 pages on two bifolia, the first on squared paper, dust-staining, marks, creases and small tears, 8vo, Paris, Spring 1884 and 'Mercredi' [July 1891] (2) Footnotes: 'JE PEINS UNE FEMME QUI A LA TETE EN OR ABSOLUMENT': TOULOUSE-LAUTREC TO HIS MOTHER ON WORK, GOSSIP FROM THE STUDIO AND HER NEW PUPPY. In 1882 Toulouse-Lautrec entered the studio of Fernand Cormon who was, at that time, enjoying success at the Luxembourg Museum with a prize-winning picture of Cain and was considered to be an excellent teacher. He threw himself wholeheartedly into studio life - 'I'm an art student up to my ears' he wrote to his mother (Correspondence, p.16). A few months after our second letter, his landmark poster La Goulue au Moulin Rouge was pasted on the walls of Paris, making him an overnight success.
