SHEPARD (ERNEST H.) Original illustration for 'The Wind in the Willows', depicting Mole disguised as a washerwoman confronting the stoat guards at Toad Hall, pencil, ink and watercolour on paper, captioned ('Wind the Willows', lower left) and signed ('E.H. Shepard', lower right) in ink, pencil note 'p.273' and '2' Mount' in margin, mounted, framed and glazed, the image 100 x 225mm., [c.1971] Footnotes: 'GOOD MORNING, GENTLEMEN!... WANT ANY WASHING DONE TO-DAY?' - The first edition of Kenneth Grahame's classic The Wind in the Willows was published in 1908, with only a frontispiece for an illustration. The publisher, Methuen, later commissioned E.H. Shepard, who had illustrated the 'Winnie-the-Pooh' series for them, to illustrated the book in 1931. In 1971 Shepard redrew the pictures for a coloured edition of the book, and it is for that book that our illustration was made. Provenance: Maruzen Co.
