Terence Stamp delivered an iconic performance as Bernadette Bassinger in the film, a transgender woman and former drag queen. His portrayal of Bernadette was widely praised, capturing the character as a compassionate, guiding presence within the trio journeying across the Australian outback, and bringing a quiet poise to a role he initially found daunting. The performance is considered a highlight of his career, showcasing, in the words of director Stephan Elliott, that his 'eyes turned everybody to jelly'. Stamp's portrayal is remembered for tackling bigotry with wit and vulnerability, making it a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ cinema. The film went on to win Best Costume Design at the 67th Academy Awards, and it became a cult classic both in Australia and abroad. Before his passing in August 2025 at age 87, Stamp had secretly filmed scenes for a planned sequel to Priscilla which is currently in filming.
