His appearance in the production helped attract attention from film producers and directors, leading to his casting in 'Billy Budd', which became his breakthrough screen role. Before becoming a film star, Terence Stamp appeared in the stage version of Alfie, playing the charismatic and womanising lead character in the theatre production before the story reached the screen. His performance helped confirm his reputation as one of the most exciting young actors of 1960s Britain. When Alfie was adapted into Alfie, Stamp turned down the film role, partly because he did not want to repeat himself and was already pursuing an international film career. The part instead went to Michael Caine, whose performance became iconic and earned him an Academy Award nomination. Provenance: From The Terence Stamp Collection.
