Freddie Young (British, 1902-1998) was a legendary British cinematographer, celebrated as one of the greatest in cinema history. He is best known for his creative partnership with director David Lean, which yielded three Academy Awards for Best Cinematography on epic films: Lawrence of Arabia in 1962, Doctor Zhivago in 1965, and Ryan's Daughter in 1970. With a career spanning over 70 years, Young shot over 130 films and pioneered numerous technical innovations. Beyond his Oscar-winning epics, his illustrious filmography includes the James Bond film You Only Live Twice in 1967, Goodbye, Mr Chips in 1939, and Lust for Life, 1956. Late in his career, at the age of 82, he also stepped into the director's chair for the British television film Arthur's Hallowed Ground, 1984.
