Hessy's in Liverpool was a leading retailer who supplied guitars and other equipment to many of the local bands, offering them the option of hire purchase. Selmer, a company founded in London in 1929, as well as importing guitars from Europe in the 1950s, began manufacturing items, including a range of amplifiers. The Truvoice was one of these and George acquired it soon after the Silver Beetles had undertaken a short tour of Scotland as the backing band for singer Johnny Gentle. Photographs of the re-named Beatles in Hamburg exist showing the Truvoice amongst their equipment but, as the notes on the ledger show that, at some point in 1961, Paul took over using the amp. The note dated 28/12/61 confirms this. However, Hessy's complaints to Brian Epstein about unpaid instalments led to him paying the outstanding amount. The ledger is illustrated p. 31, Beatles Gear, Andy Babiuk, Backbeat Books, Revised Edition, 2002. See also p. 66, op.cit.
