Puvis de Chavannes, leading French muralist of the late 19th century, executed an extensive decorative cycle for the Panthéon illustrating the Life of Saint Geneviève, begun in 1876 and completed posthumously by his students. These monumental panels, characterised by simplified forms, pale fresco‑like colour and a serene, allegorical tone, remain among his most celebrated public commissions.
