Claire's juggler costume, worn in her search for Jamie Season 1, Episode 14, 'The Search' Comprising: a custom-made khaki overcoat with floral embroidery; brown leather satchel; a silk waistcoat with printed floral pattern and an orange lining; silver shirt with frilled cuffs; and a lace neck-tie; woollen trousers with appliqué embroidery, purposefully broken-down; and a brown felt tricorn hat, all showing deliberate signs of wear, (7) Footnotes: This costume is associated with Claire and Murtagh's search for Jamie across the Highlands, following the Redcoat ambush. In this episode, Claire and Murtagh travel from village to village, deliberately drawing attention to themselves in the hope that word of Claire's presence will reach Jamie. Executive Producer Ron Moore says that the creative team explored what the characters themselves might realistically have done to attract notice, leading to the decision for Murtagh to perform a traditional Highland sword dance, while Claire sings publicly. These were embellishments that were not included in the book, but that were fleshed out within the episode. This choice was inspired directly by actress Caitriona Balfe, who was known to sing on set. The episode writer, Matthew B. Roberts, later remarked, 'Caitriona would sing on set between takes, so I told her, 'One day I'm going to have you sing in an episode.' She just laughed' (T. Bennett, p.125). The costume, designed as a juggler's outfit, deliberately sets Claire apart from both her usual dress, and from her contemporaries visually. What is particularly interesting is the fact that it features trousers, something she is rarely seen wearing in the series. It also further evokes the sense that she is playing a character, performing a song, and not being Claire. Please note that this version of the costume is for the stunt double. Literature: T.
