Owned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: A Butter or Dessert Plate from FDR's State Dinner Service. Trenton NJ: Lenox porcelain, 1934. A Lenox Porcelain butter or dessert plate from the state dinner service made for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The porcelain service is distinguished by its rich marine-blue rim bordered with forty-eight gilt stars, representing the states of the Union at the time. At the center appears the presidential eagle in full color as part of the Seal of the President of the United States. Diameter: 6 1/8 inches (15.6 cm) Provenance: Made for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, dated 1934; Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, (her estate's sale, Sotheby's New York, 23-26 April 1996, lot 61, sold for $16,100, sale label preserved). Jacqueline Kennedy likely kept the FDR dessert plate as a deeply personal emblem of the political lineage, shared history, and mutual respect that connected the Roosevelt and Kennedy families. The Roosevelt-Kennedy relationship represented a long-standing alliance between two of America's most prominent Democratic dynasties, forged by their fathers, and ultimately carried forward as a symbolic passing of the torch from the New Deal era into the age of the Kennedy administration. The 1996 Sotheby's sale of the Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was far more than an auction; it became a national moment of remembrance. Thousands of people lined up outside Sotheby's simply for the chance to glimpse the objects that had belonged to a woman who, for decades, embodied elegance, resilience, and American style. What made the auction so extraordinary was the affection people continued to feel for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. To many Americans, she represented grace under unimaginable public tragedy.
