A Plate from the State Service of Andrew Jackson. Paris: Dagoty-Honore, imported by L. Veron and Co., Philadelphia, 1833. Diameter: 8 1/2 inches (21.5 cm). Provenance: Sold Sotheby Parke Bernet, 17 November 1973, lot 782; sold Butterfield & Butterfield San Francisco [now Bonhams] 4 November 1992, lot 73. Transfer-printed and painted with an American eagle in flight carrying a cluster of arrows in one talon, a green laurel branch in the other, on his breast a red, white, and blue shield held by a banner inscribed 'E PLURIBUS UNUM,' behind his head a patch of blue sky with twenty white stars reserved within billowing sun-tinted clouds and rays of a sunburst printed in brown, within a marbled light cornflower blue border, within gilt line bands, (wear to gilt, spotting to border, rim chip), verso with stenciled factory mark imprinted in pale iron-red: 'M.ture de MADAME/Duchesse d'Angoulême/P.L. Dagoty, E. Honoré a Paris.' Andrew Jackson was known for the most exuberant receptions held at the White House. Jesse Benton Fremont reported in Souvenirs of My Times 'I have the beautiful recollection of the whole stately house adorned and ready for company... the gorgeous supper table... covered with every good thing French skill could devise...' The Paris porcelain firm Dagoty-Honoré brought exceptional artistry and refinement to the early White House, and its service for President Andrew Jackson remains one of the most striking examples of presidential porcelain from the nineteenth century. Distinguished by its richly marbled blue borders, luminous gilding, and patriotic eagle motif, the Jackson service beautifully combined French craftsmanship with American national symbolism, reflecting both the elegance and growing confidence of the young republic.
