Pieces from the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Porcelain Service. Comprising one dinner plate, 5 smaller plates (one with variant decoration), 6 butter plates and one cup and saucer from the presidential state service ordered during the administration of Benjamin Harrison, manufactured by Limoges, France, with various printed factory marks to the reverse. Each with a gilt rim enclosing a deep cobalt-blue border heightened with gilt corn and goldenrod decoration, centering the Great Seal eagle surrounded by a constellation of 44 stars. Diameter of dinner plate: approximately 9 1/2 in. (24 cm). Diameter of smaller plates: 8 3/8 inches (21 cm) Diameter of butter plates:6 inches (15 cm) Hight of cup 2 inches (5.3 cm) Ordered in December 1892 for the White House during the Harrison administration, the service reflected the artistic direction of First Lady Caroline Harrison, who took inspiration from the celebrated Lincoln state china while introducing a distinctly American regional character. Rejecting the earlier service's bold purple border, Mrs. Harrison selected a rich blue ground embellished with corn and goldenrod motifs symbolic of Indiana, the Harrison family's home state. At the center, the American eagle appears with wings displayed beneath a ring of 44 stars, commemorating the number of states in the Union at the time the service was commissioned. Produced in a substantial service of 288 pieces, the Harrison state china remains among the most admired presidential porcelain services for its elegant balance of patriotic symbolism and refined Gilded Age design. The present group is representative of the subtle variations in cobalt coloration often encountered within surviving examples of the service, a characteristic typical of late nineteenth-century Limoges manufacture.
