(27.9 x 35.6 cm) Overall 18 1/4 x 15 1/2 in. (46.4 x 39.4 cm) Provenance: Manuscript notes in pencil on frame backing: ('The warrior in the picture is 'Red Mark [sic]', a sub chief of the Oglala Sioux in South Dakota' and 'Oasis in Bad Land'); sticker on frame backing '155146'; from the Collection of Dr. Billy T. Utley. The image was included in Volume III of The North American Indian. The subject of the image, made in the heart of the Bad Lands in South Dakota, is Red Hawk, an Oglala Lakota warrior. As a young warrior, Red Hawk fought alongside Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull against General George Custer in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. Edward Curtis made a detailed study of the battle, interviewing as many participants as he could find, and remarking that Red Hawk's 'recollection of the fight seemed to be particularly clear.'
