One of the Earliest American Reports of the Repeal of the Stamp Act. The Pennsylvania Gazette. Philadelphia: Hall & Sellers, May 22, 1766. Numb. 1952. Folio (408 x 265 mm). 10 pp. Top edge trimmed, affecting text in a few places, tape repair along bottom edge of third leaf. The Stamp Act, passed by British Parliament in 1765, was a direct tax imposed on the colonial American paper goods in order to support the British military presence in the colonies. Colonists were vehemently opposed to the new tax, particularly because they had no say in its imposition. This led to wide spread protests against the Stamp Act, spawning the famous phrase, 'No taxation without representation.' The act was ultimately repealed on March 18, 1766, due in large part to colonists' boycotts and refusal to buy British imported goods. On the same day of its repeal, Parliament passed the Declaratory Act in an attempt to affirm Britain's authority to tax to colonists as it saw fit.
