'UNITE OR DIE.' The New-York Journal; or, The General Advertiser. New York: John Holt, July 21, 1774. Number 1646. Bifolium (473 x 296 mm). 4 pp. Some minor staining, corners a bit creased. John Holt's fiercely anti-British newspaper featured the iconic 'UNITE OR DIE.' masthead featuring a snake broken into parts representing the colonies from June 23 1774 until December 8, 1774. The design, originally created by Benjamin Franklin for his Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754, became a popular icon in colonial America and remains an enduring symbol of the revolutionary spirit of the United States to this day. Issues of The New-York Journal; or, The General Advertiser with the 'UNITE OR DIE.' masthead are quite rare given the limited time period during which it was used. We trace only 2 copies sold at auction since 1905 through Rare Book Hub.
