The First Printed Map of Virginia by Virginians. FRY, JOSHUA. 1699-1754. -- JEFFERSON, PETER. 1708-1757. A Map of the Most Inhabited Part of Virginia containing the whole Province of Maryland with Part of Pensilvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina. London: Robert Sayer and Thomas Jefferys, 1775. Engraved map of Virginia and Maryland on 4 sheets joined as 2 horizontal sheets, borders hand-colored in outline, each overall sheet sight 390 x 1240 mm. Matted and framed (unexamined out of frame). The first printed map of Virginia by residents of that colony, state 6 (dated 1775). Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas Jefferson, first prepared the map with Joshua Fry in 1751 at the request of president of the board of Trade and Plantations Lord Halifax. Thomas Jefferson describes his father's collaboration with Fry to produce the 'first map of Virginia which has ever been made, that of Captain Smith being merely a conjectural sketch,' and the map includes geographical information from early travelers including George Washington, John Dalrymple, and Christopher Gist. It was revised in 1751 and again in 1755 to include information about the western part of Virginia, and is the first to depict the Blue Ridge Mountains with accuracy. This 1775 issue was printed for inclusion in Jeffery's American Atlas of the same year.
