The Burning of Norfolk. The Pennsylvania Gazette. Philadelphia: Hall and Sellers, February 7, 1776. Numb. 2459. Bifolium (425 x 267 mm). 4 pp. Staining, partially separated at fold, a few tears, two with tape repairs. A Revolutionary Era newspaper covering the events of the war, including fighting and destruction taking place in Norfolk, Virginia. On New Year's Day 1776, British ships began firing on Norfolk, under Patriot control at the time following the flight of most of its Loyalist population. While Colonial forces were successful in fighting off the British attackers, the town still mostly burned, and the Patriots proceeded to loot Loyalist owned homes and business. The present issue continues to document the sporadic fighting breaking out in the area after the main conflict had passed.
