One of the Earliest Books Printed in Boston. HUBBARD, WILLIAM. A Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New England. [Boston: John Foster, 1677.] 8vo (183 x 137 mm). Lacking map, title-page, and with defective leaves. Contemporary blind panelled calf, old reback. Rubbed, joints starting. Provenance: James Cunnigham (several signatures); Richard G. Thorne (signature on inner back cover); Mr. Sophia (signature); Joseph Ingraham (signature); Robert Norman Ganz (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, Church's second issue, with the additional material added to signature M, the additional text on p. 81 in the second part, and 12 lines of errata. A cornerstone of seventeenth-century Americana. Hubbard's text remains the most definitive and historically authoritative contemporary account of King Philip's War. Though heavily defective, this volume represents a landmark of early colonial printing and a crucial primary source for the shaping of early American identity. Alden & Landis 677/116; Church 650; Evans 231; Howes H-756; Sabin 33445.
