CONTEMPORARY PRINTING OF THE TREATY OF PARIS BEFORE ITS SIGNING. Although British forces surrendered following the colonial victory at Yorktown lead by George Washington in October 1781, an agreement to formally end the war would not be signed until September 3, 1783. The terms of the Treaty of Paris treaty were drafted on November 30, 1782. Article 1 of the treaty states: His Britannic Majesty acknowledges the said United States, viz. New-Hampshire, Massachusetts's Bay, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New-York, New-Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, to be free, sovereign, and independent States.
