A highly important, landmark work on early American cartography, featuring maps that represent critical 'firsts' for the geography of North America. Purporting to be the work of a Peruvian Inca from Cusco, the text is generally attributed to Willem Usselincx, a foundational figure and originator of the Dutch West India Company. Most notably, the book features a map of North America that predates the celebrated Henry Briggs map of 1625, making it one of the earliest published maps to depict California as an island. Furthermore, it marks the first time that Hudson's Bay, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Monterey, and San Diego are definitively named on a printed map. Geographically, it also stands as the first map, manuscript or printed, to explicitly name the Hudson River.
