A Philadelphia Indenture on Vellum, Signed by Thomas McKean. [McKEAN, THOMAS. 1734-1817.] Manuscript on vellum, being an indenture for transfer of property to Ann Pemberton, widow of Joseph Pemberton, by Joel Baily. Signed by Thomas McKean as Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Additionally signed twice by Ann Pemberton, Thomas Barry and Charles Gervis, and docketed by John Beaton. Approx. 380 x 690 mm, creases from being folded, some light scattered staining. Framed (unexamined out of frame). Joseph Pemberton, Quaker merchant of sugar, wine and other imports, and was a member of the prominent Pemberton family in Philadelphia. He built a house in 1775 for his wife Ann on a plot of land next to Carpenters' Hall, but a financial downturn forced him to sell the house in 1776 to merchant William Skyes. Pemberton House stood in Philadelphia until the 1840s, where at one point a post office was operated by Richard Bache, Benjamin Franklin's grandson. After the house was demolished, it was reconstructed in 1968; it has since housed the Army-Navy Museum, Pemberton Book Store, and, currently, Independence Historic Trust. Upon his death in 1782, his estate passed to his wife Ann Pemberton, who served as executrix, and who signs this deed in that capacity. SIGNED BY FOUNDING FATHER THOMAS McKEAN, a Delaware delegate to the Continental Congress where he signed the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, and the Articles of Confederation. A Federalist and Democratic-Republican, he served as President of Congress in 1781, president of Delaware, Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and ultimately as the Second Governor of Pennsylvania.
