A Scarce Indian Captivity Narrative. [SMITH, MARY]. An Affecting Narrative of the Captivity and Sufferings of Mrs. Mary Smith, who, with her Husband and three Daughters were taken Prisoners by the Indians in August last (1814) and after enduring the most cruel hardships and torture of mind for sixty days ... was fortunately rescued ... by a detached party from the army of the brave General Jackson, now commanding at New Orleans. Providence, RI: Printed for L. Scott, [1815]. 12mo (154 x 109 mm). Folding woodcut frontispiece with period partial hand-coloring in red and yellow, 3 woodcut vignettes in text. Untrimmed. Typical staining, small hole in leaf 5 minimally affecting woodcut on recto and touching three words on verso. FIRST EDITION, with 'New-Orleans' hyphenated on the title and ending with the account of the killing and scalping of thirty persons. 'The events took place in the West Florida region, now included in Mississippi, and the Indians were a band of Kickapoos and runaway Chickasaws. The captives included Richard Smith, his wife Mary Smith, their three children and a negro lad, who lived at the extreme part of a small township, 135 miles west of the Natchez. After being taken prisoners, Mr. Smith and the children were killed, while Mrs. Smith was spared to become the wife of one of the chiefs. Killing him while he slept, she escaped for several days, but was recaptured by the Indians, and shortly after rescued by the company of soldiers under Lieut. Brown' (Sabin). The woodcuts in this narrative are particularly compelling. Howes S638; Sabin 83537.
