The image appeared in Volume I of The North American Indian. A branch of Cañon de Chelly, the site's name was derived from an 1805 massacre in which Spanish soldiers killed more than 100 Navajo people. 'Cañon de Chelly [see Lots 76-80] and Cañon del Muerto are mash-ups of sky, sandstone and mountain flanks, predating Ansel Adams with their shadow work and textural detail' (Timothy Egan, Short Nights of the Shadow-Catcher, p.148).
