Orotone, probably printed before 1920, signed in the negative ('Curtis'), framed in original Curtis Studio piecrust-style frame with The Curtis Studio Seattle label on frame backing (unexamined out of frame). 14 x 11 in. (35.6 x 27.9 cm) Overall 18 x 15 1/4 in. (45.7 x 38.7 cm) Provenance: Small typed label 'Canon del Muerto' verso; from the Collection of Dr. Billy T. Utley. The image appeared in Volume I of The North American Indian. A branch of Cañon de Chelly, the site's name was derived from an 1805 massacre in which Spanish soldiers killed more than 100 Navajo people. 'Cañon de Chelly [see Lots 76-80] and Cañon del Muerto are mash-ups of sky, sandstone and mountain flanks, predating Ansel Adams with their shadow work and textural detail' (Timothy Egan, Short Nights of the Shadow-Catcher, p.148).
