Curtis Studios Orotone. [CURTIS, EDWARD S. 1868-1952, after.] Cañon de Chelly, 1904. Orotone, printed by Mag Magnuson in the 1970s, unsigned in the negative (see below), framed in original Curtis Studio batwing-style frame (unexamined out of frame). 11 x 14 in. (27.9 x 35.6 cm) Overall 17 1/4 x 14 in. (43.8 x 35.6 cm) Provenance: Manfred 'Mag' Magnuson; acquired from the preceding by Dr. Billy T. Utley; sold to Curtis Studios employee Lazetta Wilhemina Buchterkirchen ('Bucthy'); reacquired by Manfred 'Mag' Magnuson; sold again to Dr. Billy T. Utley (see Bill of Sale included with the lot). One of the final two orotones produced by the Edward S. Curtis Studio in Los Angeles. According to a typed Bill of Sale from Mag Magnuson: 'I decided to surprise Utley by making an 11x14 orotone of the Canyon de Chelly for him. I selected the 8x10 negative out of the Master Negative Box and took it to my old studio to develop it. Unfortunately, I didn't take the glass signature plate so the last two Curtis Orotones weren't signed....The 11x14 came out quite satisfactorily, and I presented it to Bill Utley as a gift. He cherished it for several years. Then, Lazetta Wilhemina Buchterkirchen, (Bucthy), who worked in the Curtis Studio from 1931 until it closed in 1968, decided to sell her home and move into smaller quarters. She needed to get rid of several things. I encouraged Bill to acquire the 17x22 Canyon de Chelly that had been given to her by Edward S. Curtis. Bucthy finally agreed to trade the 11x14, I made, for Bill, for the 17x22... Then, a few years later, Buchty died, at the age of 96. I attended the funeral and was allowed to purchase the 11x14 Canyon de Chelly Orotone from the estate... I brought it back to Bill who is buying it from me.' Lot to be sold without reserve.
