Curtis Studios Orotone. [CURTIS, EDWARD S. 1868-1952, after.] Cañon de Chelly, c.1904 (but printed c.1970). Orotone, printed by Mag Magnuson in the 1970s, unsigned in the negative, framed in original Curtis Studio batwing-style frame with Edward S. Curtis Studios, Inc., Los Angeles label on back (unexamined out of frame). Sight 5 x 7 in. (12.7 x 17.8 cm) Overall 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. (21.6 x 26.7 cm) Provenance: Manfred 'Mag' Magnuson; acquired from the preceding by Dr. Billy T. Utley (see Bill of Sale included with the lot and note on frame backing). One of the final two orotones produced by the Edward S. Curtis Studio Los Angeles. According to Mag Magnuson's note, 'this is the next to last orotone made in 1970 as a test before making the final 11x14 orotone of Canyon de Chelly. I give to my good friend Bill Utley-- M.E. Magnuson Cofounder of Edward S. Curtis Studios, Inc., Los Angeles CA.' Mag Magnuson describes the production of the two final Orotones produced by the Curtis Studios in Los Angeles in a typed bill of sale (included here). He sought to make an 11x14 print for Dr. Billy Utley, and 'selected the 8x10 negative out of the Master Negative Box and took it to my old studio to develop it. Unfortunately, I didn't take the glass signature plate so the last two Curtis Orotones weren't signed. The lab man decided to cut one of the 11x14 seed plates in half to experiment before making the larger one. Sure enough, the 5x7 Orotone of Canyon de Chelly came out with the Indians riding left, instead of right. It was then that we remembered that you have to 'flop' the negative when making an Orotone.' When Mag Magnuson sold the 11x14 Orotone to Dr. Billy Utley (see Lot 79), he reported: 'I'm throwing in the 5x7 reversed copy of the Canyon de Chelly Orotone for good measure.' Literature: Edward S.
