Curtis Studio Los Angeles Stereo Realist Camera. [CURTIS STUDIOS, LOS ANGELES]. David White Company Stereo Realist 35mm camera, c.1947-1971, likely belonging to Manford 'Mag' Magnuson. 35mm stereo camera, presumably Model 1041, manufactured circa 1950, housed in its original brown leather 'eveready' case. The camera and accessories in a leather case, gold-lettered on the inner lid: 'Curtis Studios Los Angeles - Pasadena.' Provenance: Manfred 'Mag' Magnuson; acquired from the previous by Dr. Billy T. Utley. In 1947, Edward Curtis settled on a farm in Whittier belonging to his daughter Beth and her husband Mag Magnuson, where he lived until his death in 1952. Following his death, Beth and Mag continued to operate The Curtis Studio in its famed Biltmore Hotel location until the 1960s. The camera was likely produced in or after 1950, given its use of the David White Anastigmat f/3.5 lens. The David White Company began production on their Stereo Realist Camera in 1947, which it sold alongside special slide viewers, projectors, mounting aids and other accessories. It produced a pair of two-dimensional images which, when viewed together, made the image appear three-dimensional. While unlikely that Edward Curtis ever used this camera, he undoubtedly would have been fascinated by its mechanism. As a boy, his father gave him a stereopticon lens which sparked his lifelong passion for camera mechanics. He later employed the use of dual stereopticon projectors that allowed images to smoothly dissolve into one another on theater screens during his traveling multimedia show The Indian Picture Opera which toured in 1911, and which was his prelude to his first motion picture, In the Land of the Head Hunters, released in 1914.
