Curtis Studios Los Angeles, Miniature Bluetone Never Produced Commercially. CURTIS, EDWARD S. 1868-1952. [Untitled Miniature Bluetone. Curtis Studios Los Angeles, c.1920]. Miniature bluetone print, a double exposure, unsigned and undated, framed in a period frame (unexamined out of frame). 3 3/4 x 3 in. (93 x 75 cm.) Overall 7 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. (192 x 167 cm.) Provenance: Edward S. Curtis; by descent to his daughter, Beth Curtis Magnuson, and her husband Manfred 'Mag' Magnuson; acquired from the preceding by Dr. Billy T. Utley (Certificate of Authenticity from Mag dated January 16, 1992). RARE CURTIS STUDIOS BLUETONE NEVER COMMERCIALLY PRODUCED. The image is a double exposure print of a nude model standing in a flowing stream under tree branches. According to Mag Magnuson's certificate of authenticity, 'The model with very long hair strongly resembles Rose del Gado, the model that posed for the most popular Curtis Bluetone, Aphrodite.' Mag further certifies: 'I hereby certify this Bluetone Print, though unsigned, is an authentic Edward S. Curtis photograph. It was taken around 1920. This print was never made commercially and I doubt if any other copies of this Bluetone exist.' Edward Curtis experimented with blue-toned gelatin silver photographs between 1916 and 1930, most notably through the creation of his Aphrodite Series. Lot to be sold without reserve.
