In 1947, renowned photographer Philippe Halsman met with Albert Einstein for a portrait session. Halsman, who had escaped Nazi persecution with Einstein's assistance years earlier, engaged the scientist in conversation while photographing him. During their discussion, Halsman asked Einstein whether he believed humanity could ever achieve lasting peace. Einstein replied with weary resignation, ''No, as long as there will be man, there will be war.' At that moment, Halsman clicked the shutter, and captured Einstein's sadly knowing eyes for what became a famous portrait.' (See Walter Isaacson, Einstein, p. 494.)
