Designed by Bruce Rogers. MORISON, STANLEY (1889-1967) & LUCA DE PACIOLI (c. 1447-1517). Fra Luca de Pacioli of Borgo S. Sepolcro. New York: The Grolier Club, 1933. Small folio (315 x 210 mm). Photogravure frontispiece portrait by Emery Walker Ltd., titlepage printed in red and black within a striking red woodcut border, numerous full-page linecut plates reproducing Pacioli's classical Roman alphabet from De Divina Proportione, 8-line capital initials and typographic line ornaments printed throughout in vibrant red. Set in Monotype Centaur with small type florets designed by Frederic Goudy. Letterpress printed wet on Batchelor's handmade paper at the University Press, Cambridge. Publisher's original quarter vellum over brown and cream Florentine patterned paste-paper boards, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. Provenance: John and Jean Michael (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 390 COPIES ONLY, INITIALED 'S.M.' BY STANLEY MORISON at the close of the preface. A pinnacle of 20th-century fine press typography, this work represents an elite international collaboration between British typographic historian Stanley Morison and legendary American book designer Bruce Rogers (1870-1957). The volume analyzes and showcases the geometric layout of the Roman alphabet originally compiled in 1509 by the Franciscan friar and mathematician Luca de Pacioli-the 'Father of Accounting' and intimate companion of Leonardo da Vinci. Bibliographer John Carter famously recorded this production as the very last title to be printed on dampened sheets ('printed wet') at the Cambridge University Press.
