[PRIVATE PRESS - FINE PRINTING - BRUCE ROGERS.] KENYON, Frederic G. (1863-1952). Ancient Books and Modern Discoveries. Chicago: The Caxton Club, 1927. 4to (330 x 254 mm). 30 magnificent collotype plates of ancient papyri and biblical manuscripts executed by Emery Walker in London. Publisher's original quarter vellum over decorated marbled paper-covered boards, the spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. Provenance: Henry M. Wolf (inscription). Inscribed and signed by the book's designer, Bruce Rogers, on the front flyleaf: 'for Henry M. Wolf, Member of the Committee on Publications under whose direction this book was issued. Bruce Rogers'. Limited first edition, one of only 350 copies printed on premium handmade paper. Sir Frederic G. Kenyon, the longtime Director and Principal Librarian of the British Museum, was one of the foremost paleographical authorities of the 20th century. This work stands as his definitive overview tracing the physical evolution of ancient texts from classical papyrus rolls to early vellum codices, utilizing groundbreaking archeological finds of the era.The production of this volume is a landmark of American fine press printing. The design was entirely overseen by Bruce Rogers (1870-1957), widely considered one of the greatest book designers of the 20th century. Rogers chose a stately, classically balanced typographic layout, printed at the renowned press of William Edwin Rudge in Mount Vernon, New York. This specific copy boasts a premier association pedigree within the history of the Caxton Club. Rogers inscribed the volume directly to Henry M. Wolf, an influential Chicago lawyer, dedicated bibliophile, and vital member of the club's Committee on Publications responsible for greenlighting and funding this very project. Signed presentations from Rogers linking him directly to the publication committee of his own major works are exceptionally uncommon.
