[LEAF BOOK - WYNKYN DE WORDE]. Three Lions and the Cross of Lorraine: Bartholomaeus Anglicus, John of Trevisa, John Tate, Wynkyn de Worde, and De Proprietatibus Rerum. Newtown: Bird & Bull Press, 1992. Tall folio (xxx xxxmm). Title-page printed in red and black with an architectural/geometric center vignette. Illustrated with 19 full-page facsimiles of the original 15th-century woodcuts from De Proprietatibus Rerum. Letterpress printed by Henry Morris using Van Dijck types on Frankfurt mouldmade paper. Loose original historical artifact mounted in a protective pocket at the rear (see below). Publisher's original deluxe quarter burgundy morocco leather over tan paper boards, the front cover decorated in red block print, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Hand-bound by the Campbell-Logan Bindery. LIMITED to 138 numbered copies, this being No. 30. Accompanied by an authentic incunabula leaf (Folio 58, Liber Quintus) extracted from a defective copy of the legendary 1495 printing of Bartholomaeus Anglicus' De Proprietatibus Rerum. Printed in London by William Caxton's successor, Wynkyn de Worde, in an elegant blackletter typeface across two columns. The incunable leaf is well preserved without any modern blemishes or text losses. An elite monument of 20th-century American private press production and book history scholarship. The historical weight of this text cannot be overstated: Wynkyn de Worde's 1495 edition of De Proprietatibus Rerum was the first book ever printed on paper manufactured on English soil, sourced directly from John Tate's pioneering Hertfordshire paper mill. By pairing authoritative modern analytical essays from world-class book historians with a beautifully preserved original 1495 leaf, legendary printer Henry Morris created a landmark collector's resource that allows direct tactile study of the genesis of English printing and papermaking.
