Priced with buyers noted... Paris, Didot, 1756. 12mo (180 x 102) the Addition supplement just a bit shorter. Engraved frontispiece and a second, different image mounted and inserted. French 1/2 red morocco over marbled boards; spine with five raised bands, divided into six compartments, one compartment gilt-lettered, the remaining five stamped with a repeating gilt monogram/cipher device surmounted by a noble crown; marbled endpapers. Extremities rubbed. The present copy of this catalogue is of special interest for including in manuscript not only prices realized, but also buyers' names, and also the names of collectors that certain buyers were representing. At the back of the copy is 8-page printed addenda describing items that were left out of the main catalogue, and a schedule of dates that lots would be sold. This is followed by a second 4-page addenda with further scheduling of lots. The engraved frontispiece depicts an art auction in progress. The single additional engraved plate in the catalogue, facing p. 236, illustrates a very large and very old marble column, to which the auctioneers wanted to draw special attention. Marie-Joseph d'Hostun de La Baume, Duc de Tallard (1683-1755) amassed one of the premier private collections of the European Enlightenment. The multi-week dispersal of his estate in Paris in the spring of 1756 was a landmark moment for the international art market, drawing the world's most elite connoisseurs. The 8-page Addition au Catalogue bound at the rear was printed provisionally during the sale to account for overlooked inventory (including an uncatalogued canvas by Titian). This ephemeral piece was rarely preserved, and its presence greatly elevates the book's research value. Furthermore, the extensive manuscript biography of the Duke bound into the volume provides a comprehensive contemporary look into his inner world. It meticulously tracks his birth in 1683, his early tonsure by the Bishop of Valence, his shift to the military after his brother's passing in 1706, his wounds suffered at the Battle of Blenheim (Hochstädt), his role as Governor of Franche-Comté, and his prestigious marriage to Marie Isabelle de Rohan (Governess to the Children of France).
