Hand-colored in outline and wash with title cartouches highlighted in vibrant contemporary pink and yellow washes. The upper left drapery cartouche contains the Latin title, balanced by a corresponding Dutch title cartouche to the upper right reading 'Vlakke Aard-Kloot, of de Geheele Waereld.' Published in Amsterdam at the close of the seventeenth century, Allard's multi-hemisphere composition marks a definitive shift away from artistic, allegorical map borders toward a purely mathematical and astronomical representation of the globe. By embedding twelve secondary projections into a single plate, Allard successfully demonstrated how the Earth's continents appear when viewed from distinct poles, horizons, and oblique coordinates. Geographically, the map serves as an important time capsule for late 17th-century exploration and cartographic misconceptions. It preserves the insular myth of California depicted as a substantial island, displays 'Terra Esonis' forming an imagined land bridge between northwestern North America and Asia, and shows the early, heavily fragmented coastlines of Australia ('Hollandia Nova'), Van Diemen's Land, and New Zealand as charted by Abel Tasman.
