California as an island. HONDIUS, Henricus. (1597-1651). Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, 1666 Hand-coloured engraved twin-hemisphere map with portrait cartouches of Caesar, Ptolemy, Mercator and Jodocus Hondius in each corner and vignettes representing the four elements, 380 x 544mm, in window mount. Framed and glazed. Fourth state. Produced in response to aggressive commercial competition from rival publisher Willem Blaeu, this magnificent double-hemisphere map represents the pinnacle of Dutch Golden Age decorative cartography. It holds a vital position in geographical history as the earliest dated atlas map to chart a Dutch discovery on the Australian continent (specifically the Cape York Peninsula discoveries made by the Duyfken in 1606).The map is also celebrated for its prominent inclusion of contemporary geographical misconceptions, notably depicting California as a large, elongated island and showing nascent representations of North America's Great Lakes.
