THE FOUNDATION OF MODERN PACIFIC EXPLORATION AND NAVIGATIONAL HISTORY. Captain James Cook's three epoch-defining voyages form the absolute cornerstone of any collection of travel, geography, and maritime literature. Over more than a decade of exploration, Cook fundamentally altered the Western map of the world, successfully charting the coastline of eastern Australia, circumnavigating New Zealand, disproving the long-held myth of a vast habitable southern continent (Terra Australis), and navigating the hazardous waters of the Pacific Northwest and Arctic Ocean in search of the Northwest Passage. The First Voyage (1768-1771) on the Endeavour, compiled by John Hawkesworth, stands as the official record of the transit of Venus at Tahiti and the chartings of New Zealand and Australia's eastern seaboard. The Second Voyage (1772-1775) on the Resolution and Adventure marks the historic first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. The Third Voyage (1776-1880) on the Resolution and Discovery documents the exploration of the Hawaiian islands (where Cook ultimately lost his life) and the exhaustive mapping of the Alaskan and Siberian coastlines. Complete, uniformly bound sets spanning all three voyages-especially those retaining the separate folio atlas for the third voyage- are a cornerstone of libraries related to the Pacific or voyages and exploration generally.
